Recently, some of our customers have been asking, “What can be done to reduce the overall height in our slip ring design?” Typically, the style of slip ring that this customer ordered, a 1.5-inch bore slip ring with spun aluminum cover, is designed to mount above or below our customer’s existing rotary union.
Most of the time, the outer portion of this type of slip ring is retained by a fork style mounting bracket coming from the rotary union. The fork style mounting bracket catches a bolt or pin which threads into the side of the slip ring base casting for retention. In this case, the rotary union is not a UEA design and changing the fork bracket design is not a cost-effective solution for the customer.
We were able to find a solution for this customer by using a dished aluminum base with a spun aluminum cover. With this design, we were able to reduce the overall height while maintaining the same retention method needed to work with the rotary union. In switching to this new style, the elbow liquid tight connectors for the brush harness exits needed to change to straight liquid tight connectors which allow the mounting tube flange to be pulled up closer to the bottom of the base casting.
The threaded torque hole in the original style was moved up into the side of the new dished base casting. Even though the threaded torque hole was moved on the new design, the distance from the mounting tube flange to the threaded torque hole remained the same, allowing the distance for the fork bracket to pin retention to be the same. In this customer example, we were able to reduce the overall height by two inches while maintaining the same mounting method for the customer. This is just one example of how we customize our slip rings to meet the needs of our customer’s specific applications rather than supplying our customers with a generic component.
