There are several things that need to be considered before we can provide you an accurate quotation for your slip ring. Please refer to the
RFQ link at the top of any page on our website to guide you through the Request For Quote process.

Do you have slip rings in stock?
UEA does not stock any slip rings on the shelf. Every product is custom built for our customers. Once we have designed a slip ring for your company the information is kept on file indefinitely for future orders of the same design.

What is the smallest O.D. (Outer Diameter) slip ring UEA manufactures?
Our 0.50 1.00 bore slip ring has an outer diameter of 4.50.

What is your highest rotational speed? (in r.p.m.)
UEA Maximum Slip Ring Revolutions Per Minute - .501.00 Bore: 150 rpm; 1.50 Bore: 100 rpm; 2.504.00 Bore: 50 rpm; 6.008.00 Bore: 30 rpm; 10.00+:20 rpm. An equally important factor is duty cycle. Maximum speeds may be exceeded, but only for short times. If your duty cycle is continuous operation at maximum speeds your product life may be shorter than expectations.

Does UEA offer a pancake style slip ring?
We have looked at the possibility of designing a pancake slip ring for our product line, but feel this style does not offer the quality, versatility and design capabilities we choose to offer our customers. The flexibility of numerous amperage and voltage combinations is difficult. Particulate matter accumulates on the conductor gin if the ring plate is mounted below the brushes. Finally, gravity works against spring tension if the brush contacts are mounted below the ring plate. For these reasons, UEA does not offer a pancake spring ring.

Does UEA offer an explosion-proof slip ring?
No we do not.

What is UEAs opinion of mercury wetted slip rings offered by some slip ring manufacturers?
Mercury wetted contact slip rings are typically used in no/low noise electronic circuits or in high amperage (current) applications where a small physical size is advantageous. Many high current situations also involve higher voltages. These assemblies may not be able to meet the dielectric requirements of higher voltages.
The main drawback to a mercury slip ring is potential seal failure. Mercury is a toxic element. Use in the food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and in other health critical industries would not be advisable. Mercury slip rings are known to leak from seal faults caused by rotation speed and other variables.
Mounting positioning of mercury slip rings may also be a limitation. Upright mounting of the unit is the norm. Needing to mount the unit horizontally or inverted may cause the contact to loose immersion from the pool of mercury, thus loose continuity.
The problems above are normally associated with lower priced units. High end products may eliminate these problems, but then become prohibitively expensive to the customer.

Which part of the assembly stays stationary and which part rotates?
There are two distinct parts of a slip ring. Functionally it makes no difference whether the core (center stack) or the brushes (mounting base and housing) rotate. It is all dependent on how the assembly is mounted and installed on your machine or equipment.

Regarding slip ring enclosures: What NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) Enclosure Ratings can you provide?
UEA slip rings may be enclosed and sealed to achieve a NEMA 4 rating if requested. This is also equivalent to an IP66 rating. NEMA 4 / IP66 is an enclosure primarily intended for indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust & rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water; undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.

What is the delivery time on a custom slip ring?
Depending on the complexity of the design, custom slip rings can take as long as 4 5 weeks to complete. Most slip rings can be engineered and built in 4 weeks or less. Repeat orders for existing customers can expect an approximate 2 week ship date.

Can I transmit data signals through a UEA slip ring such as DeviceNet, Profibus, Can Bus, Allen Bradley Blue Hose?
All power and signal circuits above 24 volts can be used with standard circuits. However, UEA also offers extended pressure circuits, silver graphite brushes on standard brass rings or solid silver circuits and brushes for data transfer of these types. Environmental conditions must also be considered when choosing circuit materials. Please see Electronic Condition Circuitry graphs on pages 10 & 11 in UEA literature (pdf format) and/or the Material Selection Guide for more information.

Are UEA slip rings UL Listed or CSA Approved?
UEA has electrical slip ring assemblies recognized by both Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA). UEA slip rings have been approved as components of other complete assemblies by UL, CSA and ETL. Because electrical slip ring assemblies can only be given recognition status for specifically approved applications it has been financially unreasonable to seek recognition for every possible slip ring application. All UEA slip rings are built to the same standards of construction, materials, etc. whether for a recognized or unrecognized application. Hypot testing, etc. is done using annually re-calibrated equipment when specified by CSA or UL and can be done on unrecognized assemblies when requested by the customer. Slip ring assemblies with wire harnesses attached are 100% continuity checked. Everything possible is done to provide the safest and highest quality electrical slip ring assembly for the stated requirement.
